About us
In our time of ever-progressing technology, there is a fundamental need for STEM subjects in the world of finance. Therefore LINC-STEM was founded as an additional committee to LINC in 2019 for members to pursue and develop these heavily sought-after technical skills. Throughout the year our committee arranges a wide variety of events from Hackathons, Banking tours, Python workshops, and more. All with the common goal of preparing our members with the valuable skill set that is vital when pursuing a career within finance.

LINC-STEM is proud to present the Beginner Python workshops, a beginner’s guide to Python and programming. Python fundamentals, general programming, and applications in finance are subjects covered in the workshops. The workshops are given at the start of every semester.
Workshop Syllabus:
- Workshop 1: Python Fundamentals
- Workshop 2: Functional Programming & Visualization with Matplotlib.
- Workshop 3: Functions & Recursion, lists and dictionaries.
- Workshop 4: Data Analytics with Python.
- Workshop 5: Stock analysis with Python.
The aim is to provide students with beginner practical coding knowledge, a building block that can help students develop their programming skills further.

Advanced Python Workshops
The follow-up course to the beginner Python workshops aims to dive deeper into data analytics through exploring different machine learning methods and data visualization, ending with an optional final project. Web applications, regression analysis, clustering and neural networks are subjects covered in the workshops. The workshops are given the second half of every semester.
Workshop Syllabus:
- Workshop 1: Webscraping & APIs
- Workshop 2: Applications with Dash and Plotly
- Workshop 3: Regressions
- Workshop 4: Clustering with K-Means
- Workshop 5: Introduction to Neural Networks.
The aim is to provide students with more practical tools in Python to conduct a variety of analyses and communicate results in a useful way.

Our previous events
Copenhagen Finance Tour
The Copenhagen Finance tour consisted of a one day event whereby students from the STEM fields had the opportunity to meet representatives from technical roles at three top firms in the industry. The day began at Capital Four Asset Management where students learned about the intricate roles at an asset management firm as well as methods behind the pricing of bonds and other asset classes. Their office is built in to Telia Parken, the football stadium and home of FC Copenhagen and the Danish National team. It proves to be one of the most spectacular office views in the financial industry. At Copenhagen Fintech, students were given an insight into the entrepreneurial world of finance, with introductions to many representatives at start-up firms indicating the roles and opportunities to students at technical backgrounds. The day culminated at Nordea, who provided a thoroughly enjoyable interactive session as well as a networking session.
LINC-STEM Hackathon: A Day in the Life of a Trader
LINC-STEM held the first edition of the Hackathon, in which participating students created their own automated trading algorithms in Python and ran them live as a competition. Participants applied algorithmic trading strategies such as crossing moving averages, correlation trading strategies and even more. We welcomed students from different faculties at Lund University, as well as two quantitative asset managers, Lynx Asset Management and Capital Four to provide expertise and act as judges for the competition.
Scientists (as Quants) in Finance with Danske Bank
LINC-STEM hosted a lecture and afterwork with the Head of Quantitative Risk Analytics at Danske Bank, Stefan Kretzer. He has a PhD in Theoretical Physics and has been in the industry for more than 10 years. He was a former Quant Strategist at Goldman Sachs before joining Danske Bank. Joining him is Jens Lomborg Peterson, a Senior Quantitative analyst at Danske Bank who has a Master’s degree in Physics. Stefan and Jens outlined the role of a Quant in general and their roles in Danske Bank. They also discussed the advantages that STEM students have in this field of work.
Machine Learning Programming Session with Riksbank
Riksbank Senior Economist Isaiah Hull hosted a live programming session focusing on web scrapping and machine learning technique natural language processing in Python. The examples of text classification and sentiment analysis on central bank communications were very interesting as we were able to see practical applications of these models within Finance using relatively simple code with the help of different libraries.

Why should STEM-students pursue a career within finance?
STEM-students should definitely pursue a career within finance, simply because they have what it takes to succeed in the finance industry. They are carrying today’s and tomorrow’s knowledge about applying their main STEM subject to finance.
Our world is evolving, towards a more digital and autonomous society. Hence there is a need to adapt to conform with this development. That is why there is a high demand for STEM-students in the finance industry today. When I visited the IBF event last year, I discovered the ways I could fit in within the finance industry and made some important contacts. During that fall, I received multiple internship offers. I decided to go with Women’s Immersion Programme at Nomura, Spring Insight Week at HSBC (both in London) and Future Female Leaders in Finance at P&G in Geneva
Why should STEM-students pursue a career within finance?
In the world of finance today we are seeing a shift towards technology, where everything from trading to asset management is using new technology, such as AI, to replace employees and automate processes. This results in an increased demand for students proficient in e.g. mathematics and programming. Regardless if you want to work with investment banking or trading, having a STEM degree most often gives you an advantage.
